Institute for Peace and Development in Mindanao

Overview

Background

The Institute for Peace and Development in Mindanao (IPDM) of Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) is one of the seven units of the IPDM of the MSU system. IPDM was created by the MSU Board of Regents during its 182nd Meeting on December 2001. In 1998, Iligan Center for Peace Education and Research (ICPER) was initially created through the efforts of Dr. Luis Q. Lacar and Vice Chancellor Jimmy Balacuit. Its first Director was Dr. Jamail A. Kamlian.

Since then the center, as one of the extension units of the office of the Vice Chancellor for Reearch and Extension, has been operational and was mainly engaged in commissioned peace researches, teachers; training on Peace Education and Mindanao History and strong partnership with various local, national and international peace networks and stakeholders.

The Peace Center became part of the University System wide IPDM on July 2007 through BOR Resolution 107 series of 2007 and adopted the name of Institute for Peace and Development in Mindanao (IPDM) as mandated by Special Order (S.O.) no. 334 series of 2008.

This resolution created the University System-Wide IPDM to be guided by the University Peace Council (Chaired by the University President) as a policy making body. Under this expanded set-up, each campus was obliged to create their respective IPDM office to be headed by a Director. The Executive Director which is based at the Marawi Main Campus is the Executive Director of the System-wide Institute, responsible for general administration.
